Aust contributes 10m to stop indonesian oil companies from dumping oil on Indonesian waters

The government has imposed mandatory fines on 11 oil companies – including BP, Shell, Statoil and BP-run Royal Dutch Shell Singapore – who are facing fines of at least $10bn (£6bn) for dumping crude oil into Indonesian waters and their stocks.

The fines were announced by Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in an interview with the Guardian newspaper.

The oil companies have until September 25 to give evidence to the environment ministry, which has the power to fine them up to $10bn for each of the fines they give. The ministry can choose to impose the fine on a single company, but has chosen not to. Instead, BP, Statoil and Statoil Singapore, which together have more than 1,700 employees across the country, have been ordered to pay out a combined $13m (£8.8m) to the Indonesian environment ministry.

"We are disappointed that the government has chosen to impose severe fines on BP and Shell and also on three other well-known oil companies," said Greenpeace Indonesia. "We call for the government to suspend these fines and to pay them the full amount."

"The Indonesian public can be satisfied that the government will take serious action to protect Indonesia's oceans, particularly for protecting the vulnerable stocks on their shelves," said WWF South East Asia. "Companies must be held accountable for the consequences of their actions rather than given an excuse for delay in responding."

"All parties need to make strong commitments to protect the future of this precious resource for the future generations," said a spokesperson from BP Singapore. "At the same time BP, Statoil and Shell should continue to work toward a long term, sustainable solution to our shared environmental impact."

A number of companies that participate in the oil industry – including Shell, BP, Statoil, Chevron and Total SA – already face environmental fines of up to $7bn for pollution-related crimes from 2002 onwards, when oil prices were high. But this is the first time that the government has targeted major oil companies such as BP and Shell for fines this high, said Greenpeace.

The oil companies are the only major group of companies in the world that have so far failed to give evidence to the environment ministry, which has the power to fine them up to $10bn for each of the fines they give. The ministries of environment, national parks, agriculture and resources will decide the fines by March 2016.
